Maelcoluim werd koning van Alba in 942 - na de troonsafstand van Constantine II.

Mogelijk had Malcolm I ook nog een zoon Mogallus mac Malcolm, prins van de Schotten in 934.

1. Dubh mac Maíl Coluim (Duff the Vehement) of Scotland , * ±0928 , † ±20-7-0966 (gesneuveld) .
   
   Duff, de oudste zoon, werd in 962 koning van Schotland in opvolging van Indulf, zoon van Constantijn II. Duff is de vader van koning Kenneth III.
   
   Dub had de bijnaam Dén ("the Vehement" = de hevige) en "the Black" (an Dubh).
   
   Tijdens zijn regeerperiode was er veel onrust in Moray door de Vikingen. Dubh werd gedood in 967 bij Forres door verraad.
   Gesneuveld op 19/20 juli 966, begr. op het eiland Iona.
